As Christmas approaches, I quickly go from being The Grinch (why are they playing Christmas songs in October) to Buddy The Elf (all about the glitter) and, there’s literally nothing in between. Once that excitement sets in there’s no stopping me! The sparkly outfits and Christmas jumpers emerge for their annual appearance (though, in all honesty, I love a bit of glitz whatever time of year), the Christmas songs get played and out come my favourite Christmas films.
It’s the perfect time of the year for hibernation too and, for me, Christmas is all about the three F's: food, family-time and films. Home Alone
Watching cute Macaulay Culkin take on the wet bandits, I would imagine is a firm favourite in all households at Christmas. The question is number one or number two? The age-old dilemma, which will have most households divided. Whilst I love seeing New York at Christmas, my favourite Home Alone movie has to be the original!
From the fantastic cast, comedy moments and epic soundtrack, Home Alone is an ultimate Christmas family favourite.
This year Adam and I got our first ‘real’ Christmas tree and it really got us in the festive mood decorating the tree whilst we watched Home Alone. We were certainly rocking around the Christmas tree!
Trading Places
Eddie Murphy at his best! If you haven’t seen this film, you really need to add this to your festive film list! Both Eddie Murphy and Dan Ackroyd play superb parts!
Eddie Murphy plays the role of a homeless street hustler come millionaire in this hilarious 80’s classic! As an 80’s child myself, it wouldn’t be right to not include an 80’s movie and this film really is Eddie Murphy in full comedy glory!
The Grinch
Continuing the comedy theme is The Grinch. When it comes to Jim Carrey, you either love him or hate him! I love him! His one-liners, voices and expressions literally have me in stitches! Sometimes it’s hard to maintain a joyful and triumphant attitude throughout the Christmas period, which the Grinch only shows too well!
One of my favourite scenes is when he can’t find an outfit so decides he’s not going out! A problem we can all relate to when trying to find the perfect outfit for the party season!
Edward Scissorhands
Maybe a slightly alternative Christmas pick, but a film I’ve always loved growing up. A firm family favourite, aided by the fact my Mum has a huge crush on Johnny Depp! Not sure I see the sex appeal in this movie, though I love the messages conveyed in this film. Everyone deserves joy and happiness at Christmas and Depp’s haunting performance as oddball outsider Edward Scissorhands portrays a misunderstood soul who just wants to help others.
It’s a Wonderful Life
It’s a Wonderful Life is a truly inspirational film, heartwarming story and one that has me in tears (though, truth be told it doesn’t take much to set me off!)
I’m a sucker for a traditional black and white film and have a particular fondness for James Stewart (I mean, have you seen Harvey?) The film depicts the story of George Bailey, a selfless man who takes on the woes of his family and community to the point of breaking point. After wondering what life would be like for those around him if he wasn’t in it, he is visited by an angel who shows him how many lives he has changed for the better.
The film not only helps viewers understand the true meaning of Christmas but life itself. Film 4 usually airs It’s a Wonderful Life throughout the festive period so make sure you give it a watch! It is a long film so make sure you have plenty of popcorn as well as tissues at the ready!
In all honesty, I have so many Christmas faves and such diverse taste it was so hard narrowing down the post to five films. However, I’d like to think the films above showcase the various styles, genres and moods which depict my viewing choices!
As a Film & Tv Graduate, I can’t talk about my favourite Christmas films without mentioning tv!

Chronicles of Narnia
Another joy of being an 80’s child is growing up watching the Chronicles of Narnia tv series. Millennials may laugh seeing the animals shuffle around in their unconvincing costumes, but this series has to be the highlight for any 80s kid at Christmas. If you ever wondered why I shy away from eating Turkish delight, this series will give you every answer you need!
The O.C. Chrismukkah episodes
We all have a teen drama we love/d be it Gossip Girl, Dawson’s Creek or Riverdale (which I’m currently binging!) My all-time favourite teen drama is without a doubt The O.C. (followed closely by Dawson’s Creek) and I love revisiting the Chrismukkah episodes with my friend Ves.
In the Cohen household, Chrismukkah is a celebration of Christmas and Hanukkah, with Ves and I loving nothing more than watching these episodes surrounded by an array of food!
The League of Gentlemen
Are you local? I am saying hello Dave (if you know, you know) to my all-time favourite comedy series The League of Gentlemen, which to my delight is returning to our screens on the BBC this Christmas! The return of The League really is the creme brûlée of my Christmas viewing!
