National Afternoon Tea Week: Afternoon Tea @ Hush Holborn

This week is National Afternoon Tea week to celebrate the heritage of Afternoon Tea in Britain - Read about my Afternoon Tea at Hush Holborn.

Afternoon Tea is a quintessentially British tradition, with the inspiration devised by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford in 1840 and tea rooms becoming all the rage in the 19th century for ladies to attend without a chaperone to socialise, share gossip and in some instances attend tea dances. Whilst in modern times Afternoon Tea may not be as regular an occurrence, many people today choose to treat friends and family members to High Tea at The Ritz or Champagne Tea at Fortnum and Mason with many restaurants and manor houses up and down the country keeping the tradition alive. Themed Afternoon Tea is very popular with hotels such as The Sanderson and One Aldwych having their own themes of Alice In Wonderland and Charlie & The Chocolate Factory, both of which I would love to try myself.

This week is National Afternoon Tea week to celebrate the heritage of Afternoon Tea in Britain and many venues across the country are offering exclusive discounts, therefore this need not be expensive to join in.

My friend Nikki and I attended Hush Brasserie in Holborn at the weekend, which offers its own Sparkling Afternoon Tea with a jam bellini cocktail, pot of loose leaf tea, traditional finger sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and jam and mini macaroons to finish at the bargain price of £19.95 per person.

The Afternoon Tea was served in a beautiful Cath Kidston-esque teapot with teacups in a similar design and a traditional three tier stand containing the sandwiches, scones and macaroons. The jam bellinis were available in a variety of flavours: marmalade, strawberry, raspberry and apricot and were a refreshing way to begin our Afternoon Tea and day in London. 

Two of each flavour finger sandwiches were provided with fillings of smoked salmon, egg and cress and cucumber. The loose leaf tea with strainer gives a strong, fuller-flavoured tea with the spread both looking and tasting great. Four mini macaroons in assorted colours were on the top tier and despite being a lighter option than traditional cake, overall the Afternoon Tea was filling. No matter how you pronounce scones, for me they never taste as nice at home as the do served warm as part of Afternoon Tea with fresh clotted cream and jam. The Afternoon Tea at Hush was an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon; after all eating warm scones and drinking tea really does make you proud to be British.

The Hush Holborn Brasserie is opposite the bloggers dream hotel The Rosewood and is located close to Holborn Tube station, within walking distance of Covent Garden. Whether you are a renowned Afternoon Tea-goer or have picked up your tea etiquette from Made In Chelsea’s Mark Francis (no pinky fingers please!), there are Afternoon Tea deals currently available to suit everyone.
